Oceanography Classes to Participate in "Shad" Conservation Program!

Mrs. Gina Treat and her Oceanography classes have been accepted into the "Shad in the Classroom" program, which is sponsored by Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Since 1996, students in Washington D.C., Fairfax, Alexandria, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties have raised American Shad in their classrooms and released them into the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. Mrs. Treat's students will be one of the first group of students from Prince William County to take part in the conservation program.

Over the winter months, the students will set up the tanks and perform a variety of tests prior to collecting the fish eggs. Once students have collected the eggs, they are placed in the shad tank. The students will spend the following week watching the fish fry hatch. The hands-on program allows students first hand experience in raising and releasing American Shad into the Potomac River.

For more information, please contact Mrs. Gina Treat at Potomac Senior High School.
